In this session, the effects of key features of autism spectrum disorders will be described and related to useful technology. All areas of life will be considered, across the spectrum and across the lifespan: home, school, work, community, safety and having fun! Both “low” and “high” tech items and devices will be explored. Learn how people with autism spectrum disorders who are described as “low functioning” can learn new skills and why people described as “high functioning” may need the support of technology in many life areas. Learn several reasons why many children and adults don’t learn to use augmentative communication devices functionally and prevent that from ever happening again!Come and enjoy Ms. Doyle’s practical, realistic, and knowledgeable approach and her lively, engaging presentation style.

June 1, 2009 Region 16 Summer Autism Conference in Amarillo Texas

“Positive Behavioral Change”

Replacing dangerous or problematic behavior with more functional, adaptive, and communicative behavior is a key goal for all programs supporting people with developmental disabilities. Learn strategies to change behavior in any environment even if you do not have more time or more money!

Participants in this workshop will learn how to:

• Define, discuss and change problematic behavior in a positive, effective manner

• Identify why typical behavior “modification” approaches are not always effective

• Emphasize an environmental/communication approach

• Apply “unifying” assumptions that will make behavioral interventions more effective and improve quality of life for everyone

• Use objective observation and behavioral descriptions for maximum behavioral change and to choose interventions that really work

• “Test” various personal opinions regarding the causes of problematic behavior

• Avoid the “can’t vs. won’t” dilemma

• Use simple, effective ways to collect and analyze data

And

“Creating the Future Today: Changing Society’s View of People with Disabilities by Modeling Positive Interactions”

We CAN help create communities that honor, embrace, and value all people. Discover how each of us has a profound impact on societal and “community” perspectives towards the people with disabilities we support. This presentation empowers participants to consciously influence the attitudes of those around them, and thus create a more inclusive society for everyone.

Participants will learn how to:

• Identify opportunities for people with disabilities to belong and contribute

• Choose service goals and activities that promote belonging and contribution at home and in the community

• Identify opportunities for each of us to influence societal attitudes in everyday life

• Model interactions that promote valuing all individuals

• Help others “make sense” of the behavior and communication of people with disabilities
